Outlook of the Chinese Polysilicon Industry



2/3rds of current polysilicon production is soaked up by the semiconductor industry. The other 0.33 belongs to the consumption by photovoltaic power cells. Seeing as photovoltaic power cells do not require highly pure semiconductors, monocrystalline silicon may be employed by these cells. The province of Jiangsu has made a project that aims at reaching a capacity of thirty thousand tons of polysilicon in 2011 6 times the production capacity in place in the whole of the country in 2008.

The prediction for Chinese production of polysilicon is approximately 60,000 tons in 2011 and over 100,000 in 2012.

A conservative guess of worldwide production in 2012 is 240,000 tons. In 2008, total production by the seven largest makers was 120,000 tons. In 2008, global supply of cell modules was 5.5GW. The amount in 2012 is guestimated to reach 12GW. Leading edge technology allows for six grams of cell modules to generate 1W. Therefore , 72,000 tons of polysilicon will be needed in 2012. There's now an oversupply of the product in the world.

Over ten fabrication plants have been reconstructed in China since 2008.

Big quantities of capital are needed for investments in polysilicon. Around Greenbacks 143 million is mandatory for the production of one thousand tons of polysilicon. Over DOLLARS fourteen billion in polysilicon investment projects has been planned for China over the last few years.

Average production costs for the biggest Chinese polysilicon producers now lies around forty $ / Kilo and 70 Dollars / Kilo. In 2008, the average production cost for all Chinese corporations was around 450 $ / Kilo. The average cost at present is around seventy USD / Kilo and 80 Dollars / Kilo. Even the newest polysilicon producers have seen their profits being reduced. Nevertheless, makers can still up their returns if they invest in technology and manage costs well. The average ROI period for polysilicon projects is around three to 4 years.
