What are PV Solar Cells?

In PV solar energy panels, the word photovoltaic, or PV for short, literally translates to mean "light-electricity". The word is made from of 2 parts : "photo" a word derived from the Greek word for light, "phos", and "volt", which is the unit of measurement named after the Italian physicist that pioneered in the discipline of electricity. Fundamentally, this word explains how solar electrical technologies work. Photovoltaic materials and attire convert light energy to electricity.

A photoelectric effect ( the emission of electrons from the surface of metal responding to light ), happens when semiconducting materials,eg the Silicon in some PV solar cells, are exposed to light. This outlines the basic process in which PV solar panels convert daylight to electricity.

The particles which make up sunlight, or photons, contain varying amounts of energy which correspond to the varied wavelengths of the solar spectrum. Whenever photons hit the cells on PV solar panels, they're either reflected or absorbed, or pass right through the cells of a PV solar energy panel. Nevertheless only the photons that remain in the cells of the PV solar panels, through absorption, produce electricity by transferring energy on to an electron in the atoms of the semiconductor in the PV solar energy panel. These electrons then move on from their normal position, within the atoms of the semiconductor, and create an electrical current in the PV solar cell.

PV systems, such as PV solar cell systems, are made from various components : PV modules, which are generally called panels ; batteries ; charge regulators for stand-alone systems ; inverters for utility-grid-connected systems and when alternating electric current is needed, in opposition to direct current ; wiring and the mounting framework.

There are 4 main sorts of solar electricity technologies: 1.Photovoltaic ( PV ) systems ( i.e. PV solar cells ) 2.Concentrating solar power ( CSP ) systems 3.Solar water heating systems 4.Transpired solar collectors or "solar walls"

About 180 kilowatt-hours per square meter can be generated by PV solar energy panels that maintain a 10% efficiency rate. Lots of PV solar panels are literally capable of lasting up to between twenty to thirty years and usually only degrade at rates of less than 1 percent per annum.

Today's PV solar panels are only capable of capturing a small bit of the light range in sunlight, forcing them to maintain a low potency rate - often between 7% and 17%. In contrast to PV solar energy panels, a traditional normal fuel generator has a potency of roughly 28%.The term "energy conversion efficiency" defines the quantity of energy produced in relation to the quantity of energy available to the PV solar cell.

However, efforts are being made to extend the efficiency of PV solar energy panels and so the amount of energy they can produce. In systems where solar heat is converted to a transfer medium like water,eg in solar thermal devices, potency decreases. In these systems, a large amount of the heat is reflected away before it can even be used. Some PV cells in modern PV solar energy panel development projects may be able to convert up to forty percent of the light caught into electricity.
