The huge oil boom in Baku

Oil is an extremely valuable commodity and has been for an extremely long time. It has shaped the fortunes and history of many places and is likely to continue to do so as oil supplies are believed to be getting worryingly low. One place which has an amazing history which it largely owes to oil is Baku in Azerbaijan. Baku has been a supplier of much of the world's oil for a long time but its first major level of production was during World War one.

Throughout the three years of world war one Baku produced 15% of all of the world's oil reaching an astonishing level of 28,683,000 tons of oil. Throughout this time Baku was the subject of a great deal of attention from the Germans and the British as it was thought that whoever controlled Baku would control the surrounding sea. Britain maintained control of Baku until it was safe to hand it back over once again.

Following the end of world war two Baku's oil extraction levels reached their highest yet with more than 20 million tons being extracted and shipped every single year. Ever since the first boom in Baku oil extraction has continued to rise and there is a very good chance that a new boom could occur very soon causing them to rise much more.

At the start of the 21st century and the end of the 20th there was a large increase in the level of investment in oil in Baku. A lot of existing oil companies bought shares in Baku's oil companies and moved in to help them increase their extraction levels. This has caused major changes throughout Baku with huge buildings being built everywhere.

When the first oil boom occurred in Baku the amount of oil needed by the world was far lower than it is today and so extracting what was needed didn't have too much of a negative impact on the city. Today's oil requirements are far higher though and this is changing Baku completely. The influx of large organisations looks to be the start of a new boom in Baku.
